The iguaçu waterfalls was Ron's challenge was, to me, one of those who turned out to be easy due to this list. On the other hand, this is one that I look and gave up almost immediately:

So, your goal is to find out the exact location and the geology of this place and, if you are the first, you can have the honor of presenting the next WoGE. No Schott's Rule! Rules, tips and previous WoGEs are collected by Felix on his blog and a KML file is available with all WoGEs.

  1. When Luis hosts a WoGE, I always start looking in Portugal. That paid off this time too, sort of!

32.76°N, 16.95°W - the island of Madeira. The Madeira archipelago itself is a series of oceanic volcanic islands that date back to the Miocene (about 20 million years ago), and constructed from a hotspot in the Earth's crust of the African Tectonic Plate. Madeira, and the smaller Desertas Islands, are the youngest of these islands (dating from 4.6 to 0.7 million years), while Porto Santo, the smaller of the main islands, is the oldest (approximately 14 million years). No volcanic activity seems to have taken place in the last 6000 years.

The highest peaks of the island, in the center of the picture here, seem to have resisted erosion thanks to the many intrusive dykes of basalt and trachyte.

Steep mountains without discernible sediment layers led me to think it could be a volcanic region, and that again made me check the Portuguese islands: Azores and Madeira.

    1. I don't know what gave you the impression of me being portuguese - I'm this guy's grandson O;)

Seriously now, it's a hard working time for me now and I don't had much time to find a new and real challenge (sadly, I found out that my "next-WoGE" spot was already picked), so I picked up this one from the "bottom of the drawer" - I tough that this one would last longer but ... hey ... let's go Ole! :)
